Grants

The Foundation does not provide any grants itself. It rents out flats and studios to academies, other foundations and institutions that in turn award grants for residencies at the Hôtel Chevillon. Below is a list of organisations currently affiliated with the Foundation. The funding organisations’ target groups represent a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines, which makes the Hôtel Chevillion an exciting and stimulating place in which to work.

How to apply for a residency at the Hôtel Chevillon

The Carl Larsson Foundation, Göteborg University

Each year, the Foundation awards a number of grants to art students at Göteborg University or students at the Chalmers Institute of Technology Department of Architecture. One of these grants covers a two-month stay at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing and gives a contribution to the cost of living.

Grant-takers must be under the age of 30, show independence and originality in their work and supply a high-quality presentation of themselves and their work.

No applications accepted. Grants are awarded by a separate body, the Carl Larsson Grant Board.

The Eric Ericsson Foundation

The Foundation awards one artist’s grant per year covering a two-month stay at the Hôtel Chevillon artists’ community in Grez-sur-Loing. No applications accepted.

The Finnish Culture Foundation

Suomen Kulttuuriarahasto, the Finnish Culture Foundation, annually awards two grants, each for a six-month residence at the Hôtel Chevillon for artists during the periods February 1–July 31 and August 1–January 31 as well as a grant to authors during the period February 1–July 31. The grants covers accommodation and give a contribution to the cost of living.

These grants can be applied for by Finnish artists and authors who are either Finnish citizens or residents in Finland. Applications to be submitted in September at the latest.

Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland

The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland (Svenska kulturfonden) annually awards a grant for a six-month residence at Hôtel Chevillon for the period of 1 July - 31 December. The period of application is in March. Swedish-Finnish or Swedish-speaking professional artists living in Finland and working in the fields of visual arts, literature and theatre may apply for the grant. The grantholder is given free residence in the Carl Larsson house and studio for six months and a grant. In 2010, the amount of the grant is 10 500 €.

The Halland Art Appreciation Society

Each year, the The Halland Art Appreciation Society awards a grant covering a two-month stay in a one-bedroom apartment with an adjacent studio at the Hôtel Chevillon. The grants covers accommodation and travel expenses and give a contribution to the cost of living and art material.

The grant is announced in the magazine of the Swedish Artists’ National Organisation (KRO) as well as in the local newspapers Hallands-Posten and Hallands Nyheter.

The grant is open for active artists born and/or residing in the province of Halland.

The Hasselblad Foundation

Each year, the Hasselblad Foundation awards a grant to a Swedish photographer for a residence during September and October and for a scientist during November and December at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing. The grants cover accommodation and give a contribution to the cost of living.

The grant for photographers can be applied by those living and working in Sweden as well as by Swedish photographers residing abroad. The grant for scientists can be applied by natural scientists who are active as teachers/researchers at either Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg University or Karlstad University.

The Artists’ Society/The Elsa and Axel J Sjögren Foundation

Each year, the Foundation awards four grants, each for a one month residence at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing as well as a small allowance for old and infirm members.

The grant-takers shall primarily be members of the Artists’ Society.

The grant is advertised in the Artists’ Society’s monthly newsletter. Applications must be submitted by December 15 at the latest.

The Royal Academy of Fine Arts

This is a grant covering studio and accommodation for painters, drawers, sculptors or architects at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing. The grant includes free accommodation and studio (the Carl Larsson studio) during two months from January up to and including June. Applications (no form available) must include information on education, current work and references as well as preferred period of stay. Advertised in newspapers nationwide in October.

Scottish Arts Council

Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship

The National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Arts Council jointly administer the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship, which was initiated in 1994 by Franki Fewkes, a Scottish RLS enthusiast then living in France.

The award is to enable a Scottish writer to spend time working at the Hôtel Chevillon, where Robert Louis Stevenson spent time writing and met his future wife. The award is for maximum of two months stay and provides accommodation in a self-catering studio apartment at the Hôtel Chevillon. Travel and accommodation is paid for in addition to a monthly grant to cover living expenses.

Partille Bookshop

Each year, Partille Bookshop awards a grant to a person who has benefited the bookshop personally or by way of his or her books, and who is promising within his/her area. The grant is awarded to authors of fiction, children’s books and non-fiction as well as other professionals in the book industry such as translators and illustrators. The grant covers a two-month residence at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing.

No applications accepted. The winner is selected by Eva Carlberg Larsson, the owner of Partille Bookshop.

The Tore and Märta Kurlberg Memorial Foundation

Each year, the Tore and Märta Kurlberg Memorial Foundation awards a grant covering a one-month stay at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing as well as a lump sum covering costs in conjunction with the stay. The grant-taker shall be a working visual artist and residing in one of the following municipalities: Kungälv, Orust, Stenungsund, Tjörn or Uddevalla. As of 2006, the grant is awarded by way of a nomination process. Each member of the Foundation Board nominates one or several persons. As a basis for decision, artists living in the relevant municipalities are invited to submit information about their work. The general public is also invited to nominate candidates by sending a letter or e-mail to the Board. The winning candidate is selected during the Board’s autumn meeting, and the ceremony takes place on May 12, which is Tore Kurlberg’s birthday.

The Anna Ahrenberg Foundation for Scientific and Other Purposes

The Anna Ahrenberg Grez-sur-Loing grant is to promote the artistic or scientific development of working artists, authors, musicians, composers and scientists living in Göteborg. The grant covers a two-month stay, preliminary during November/December, at Grez-sur-Loing south of Paris. It covers accommodation and studio at the Hôtel Chevillon and a lump sum to cover travel and expenses.

The Swedish Authors’ Association

Each year, the Authors’ Association announces six grants of one month each covering a residence at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing. The application form is distributed to all members of the association twice a year. Only members of the Swedish Authors’ Association are eligible. The application must include a motivation and your preferred period of stay. The grant covers a one-month residence between August and January as well as a contribution to travel expenses.
