    The Grez-Sur-Loing Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting artistic, scientific and literary research and education by providing apartments, studios and other workrooms for artists, writers, composers and scientists, from Sweden and elsewhere, at the Hôtel Chevillon in Grez-sur-Loing, France.

  • About Grez-sur-Loing

    Grez-sur-Loing is a village with a population of about 1,400 situated approximately 70 kilometres south of Paris and 9 kilometres south of Fontainebleau. The central part with its meandering streets and enclosed areas looks the same as it did over 100 years ago. The village is off the beaten track, built on the river that runs leisurely underneath the imposing leafy trees.

The Swedish writer August Strindberg described the meals in Grez-sur-Loing like this: ”Staying at the pension are Englishmen, Americans, Norwegians snd Swedes. […] No one worries about what anyone else is doing. If the Scandinavians at their end of the table celebrate a name-day with tinned sprats and a dram and sing ’for the first glass’, the Americans may possibly listen to the singing, but will not give it another thought; and if an American chooses to eat raw tomatoes and drink brandy with his meal and then rest his feet on a mantelpiece or a coathanger, the Scandinavians will consider it none of their business.
